DEBORAH MITCHELL, PHD
Founder + President
Deborah Mitchell is Founder and President of CypressTree Corp. She received her Ph.D. in Behavioral Science and Marketing from the University of Chicago, later holding research faculty appointments at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford Graduate School of Business. Her academic research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Behavioral Decision-Making and Journal of Advertising.
Early in her academic career she began consulting, working with executives and organizations as an extension of her research. From the beginning, Deborah's work has reflected her strong commitment to connecting the best of academia and current research with the pressing needs of people and organizations across industry, the public and social sectors. Partnering with clients to create measurable, real-world applications – as well as a platform for industry to influence academic endeavors – has been central to Deborah's career.
In 1996, Deborah left Stanford and founded Cypress Consulting (later renamed CypressTree Corp.) in response to client demand for services and partnership requiring a full-time focus. CypressTree today is led by Deborah and represented by a team of full-time employees, as well as a network of experts in strategy, research, communications, training and related areas, engaged on a project-needed basis.
A gifted communicator, facilitator and coach, Deborah has won teaching awards at multiple universities including Wharton, the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University and Wisconsin School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was voted “Best Professor” two years in a row by MBA students. As a business leader, she has been actively involved in the Women’s President’s Organization as well as other industry associations and boards. She continues to bridge the worlds of academia and business, serving as a Clinical Associate Professor at her alma mater, the Fisher College of Business.
Michelle has more than 20 years of experience working in consulting and executive development, with both private and public sector audiences. She has held positions with the United States Peace Corps, Columbia Council on World Affairs, University of Illinois and The Ohio State University. Michelle holds an M.A in Public Administration from Western Illinois University where she was a Peace Corps Fellow in Community Development, and an M.A. in International Studies from The Ohio State University.
Mike studied for his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Linguistics, simultaneously serving as Director for the Consumer Behavior and Decision Making Laboratory at Chicago's Graduate School of Business. He has worked with clients across a broad range of industries, from UNext (online education) to ING Financial Services and CNN. He brings his linguistic and innovation process skills to collaborate with clients across various design + education initiatives and larger-scale engagements. He is also experienced in building quantitative models and tools, especially to surface, access, communicate and synchronize organization value + enterprise knowledge.
